С 1859 работал в нью-йоркской больнице Беллвью [Bellevue Hospital], в 1866 назначен деканом медицинского факультета Городского университета г. Нью-Йорка [ City University of New York]. За фотографии прохождения Венеры, сделанные им в 1874, Конгресс США [ Congress, U.S.] принял решение о чеканке золотой медали в честь Дрэпера.
